Dear Friends:
Major emotional depression, in its many forms, is an illness. It is not a flaw of character, or an unwillingness to "cope" or to see "the glass half-full". It is a serious condition requiring serious treatment. Some of these treatments include cognitive therapy, psychiatry, counseling, prescription medication -- or some combination of these approaches.
Make it your business to recognize the symptoms of serious depression. If you just enter the word "depression" on Google and conduct a search, the first page of results should provide you with a wealth of information. If you find yourself suffering with symptoms of depression, get help immediately (scroll down to the RESOURCES Section at the bottom of this page). If someone whom you know is talking about or showing signs of depression, make it your business to tell that person that he or she should get help.
Depression is, in large part, treatable...but it does not generally get better left untreated. In fact, it usually gets worse over time. Get the facts about depression. You don't have to suffer. And you don't have to handle depression alone -- there are many resources available.
One very good source of information and help is the Depressed Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA). They have a toll-free helpline which is open 24 hours daily, and they have support groups at locations all over the country:
Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance
730 N. Franklin St. Suite 501
Chicago, IL 60654
800-826-3632
Don't ignore depression. Don't isolate yourself. Please get help. Don't wait.
Faithfully,
Douglas Castle
